Traditional Nigerian Healthy Recipes: South-East

One cannot discuss the cuisine of the South-East (historically and culturally referred to as Igboland) without making reference to the importance of yam in their diet.

Just as the potato is synonymous with Irish culture, so too is the yam with Igbo culture; indeed the Iwa Ji festival or, in English, “The New Yam Festival of the Igbo people” is an annual event at the end of the rainy season that celebrates the conclusion of one farming cycle and the beginning of another.

It is easy to see why yam is such a respected dish in this region too. A complex carbohydrate full of dietary fibre, yams are great for moderating blood sugar levels. Brimming with vitamins and nutrients: Vitamin C (27% of recommended daily intake), various B vitamins, Vitamin A, Riboflavin, Potassium and Calcium amongst several others, Yam is very much a super-food!

When it comes to Nigerian food, the Igbo bring yam to the table and there are not many other ingredients more deserving of the centrepiece.
